On Monday, August 26, French authorities are expected to make a statement regarding the detention of Pavel Durov, the CEO of Telegram.
The Russian businessman Pavel Durov launched Telegram in 2013, and since then, it has developed into one of the most popular online communication platforms worldwide. In nations like Russia, Ukraine, and India, Telegram is essential for messaging, obtaining independent news, and exchanging opinions. In 2013, Durov and his sibling, Nikolai Durov, founded Telegram. It claims to have 900 million active users on the app. Pavel Durov’s net worth is $9.15 billion, based on Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index. After defying the Russian government’s demands to provide information on Ukrainian Vkontakte users, Durov fled Russia in 2014 and is currently a resident of Dubai. Durov holds dual citizenship with France and the United Arab Emirates.
As of August 25, there doesn’t seem to be any official confirmation that Mr. Durov has been arrested or charged with any crimes, despite the fact that he was detained on a long list of charges pertaining to the Telegram messaging app’s lack of moderation.
Regulators in the European Union have recently intensified their efforts to target online platforms in an effort to combat illegal content and misinformation. On Sunday, the Russian Embassy in France affirmed Durov’s incarceration and declared that it is in communication with Durov’s counsel.
A representative for the embassy reportedly stated on Telegram on August 25 that “as of today, the French side has so far avoided cooperation on this issue,” according to the Post. The fallout from Durov’s arrest has, as Cointelegraph recently reported, caused the price of TON to drop by more than 12%; however, it appears that this has had the opposite effect on the support that the cryptocurrency and Telegram communities have for him.
