The Art of Draping a Saree: Step-by-Step Guide
Draping a saree is an art that requires practice and precision. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you drape a saree:
- Start with the underskirt:
- Wear a fitted underskirt or petticoat that matches the color of your saree. Tie it securely around your waist, ensuring it rests at the desired height.
- Tuck in the saree:
- Begin by tucking the plain end of the saree into the underskirt at your right hip. Make sure the length is appropriate for the desired drape.
- Make pleats:
- Hold the saree fabric and make 5 to 7 pleats (the width depends on personal preference) with even widths.
- Ensure the pleats are neatly aligned and facing towards the left.
- Tuck the pleats:
- Take the pleats and tuck them into the waistband of the underskirt, slightly to the left of the navel.
- Adjust the length of the pleats to achieve the desired fall.
- Create the pallu (the loose end):
- Take the remaining fabric and bring it over your left shoulder, allowing it to fall to the back.
- Adjust the length of the pallu as per your preference. A longer pallu can be draped over the shoulder, while a shorter pallu can be left hanging loose.
- Secure the pallu:
- Use a safety pin to secure the pallu to the blouse on your left shoulder. Make sure the pin is discreet and doesn’t damage the fabric.
- Arrange the pleats:
- Adjust and fan out the pleats to create an even and aesthetically pleasing look.
- Make sure the pleats are straight and evenly spread.
- Final touches:
- Check the saree’s length and adjust it as needed. The bottom edge of the saree should slightly touch the ground when wearing heels.
- Adjust the pleats, pallu, and folds to ensure a neat and well-draped appearance.
- Use additional safety pins to secure any loose ends or pleats if required.
Remember, draping a saree takes practice, so don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t look perfect the first time. Watch tutorials, seek guidance, and experiment with different draping styles to find the one that suits you best. With time and practice, you’ll become more comfortable and skilled at draping a saree elegantly.
